The Curly Girl Method

Curl by Curl cutting...
What every curly should know!
The Curl-by-Curl™ cutting method, created by Lorraine Massey (the pioneer behind the Curly Girl Method and founder of CurlyWorld), is a specialized, sculptural approach to cutting textured hair.
Instead of treating curly hair like straight hair that happens to bend, this technique respects the unique behavior, spring factor, and pattern of every individual curl group on a person's head.
Here is a breakdown of the core principles that define the method:
1. Cut Completely Dry
Traditional hairdressing relies on wetting the hair, pulling it taut with a comb under tension, and cutting straight lines. Massey’s method completely rejects this for texture.
The Reason: Curly hair shrinks significantly when dry, and different areas of the same head often have entirely different curl patterns (e.g., tighter coils at the crown, looser waves at the nape). Cutting dry ensures there are no surprises with shrinkage.
2. Zero Tension & No Combs
The hair is never combed through or stretched while cutting. Combs disrupt the natural grouping of the curls (the "clumps") and create artificial elasticity.
The Reason: By letting the hair sit completely naturally, the stylist sees exactly how the curls fall in real life.
3. Treating Every Curl as a Unique Entity
As the name implies, the stylist literally looks at the head curl by curl. You isolate an individual curl clump, assess where it bends, where it lacks bounce, or where it changes direction, and cut it precisely where it needs it.
The Core Philosophy: "Cutting the Spring"
The fundamental logic of the Curl-by-Curl method hinges on three distinct pillars:
Respecting the "C" Shape: Curls are cut at the crest of their natural bounce or at the opening of the "C" shape, rather than right in the middle of a curve, which can cause the curl to frizz or flare out awkwardly.
Sculpting, Not Sectioning: Instead of using rigid geometric sectioning grids, the stylist sculpts the hair like a 3D structure. The focus is on creating a balanced silhouette that flatters the client's face shape and accommodates the hair's natural volume.
No Thinning or Texturizing Shears: Thinning scissors or sliding razor techniques are strictly forbidden. They slice open the cuticle of textured hair, leading to massive frizz, split ends, and shattered curl clumps. Every cut is a clean, blunt snip with sharp, straight shears.
The Workflow Paradigm Shift: In traditional salons, the process is Wash → Cut → Style. With the Curl-by-Curl method, the process flips to Analyze & Dry Cut → Cleanse & Hydrate (to lock in the new shape) → Final Visual Check (once dried again to snipping any stray canopy hairs).
Ultimately, it’s less about a technical formula and more about visual education—understanding how weight
distribution affects spring, and letting the hair dictate the shape rather than forcing a template onto it.

Leanne Fuller
With over 30 years of elite industry experience, Leanne is Hampshire’s premier authority on Curly hair. While her foundation spans three decades of master hairdressing, the last 8 years have been dedicated exclusively to a singular passion: the art and science of the curl.
Leanne’s expertise isn't just self-taught—it is certified at the highest level. Trained directly by the global pioneer of texture, Lorraine Massey, Leanne is one of only two stylists in the entire county of Hampshire to hold this
prestigious, authentic credential.
Having studied the original Curl-by-Curl™ method at the source, Leanne rejects the
generic templates of conventional hairdressing. She understands that #Curly hair cannot be treated like straight hair that happens to bend. Her approach relies on meticulous,
dry-sculpting techniques that respect the unique spring factor and grouping of every
individual curl clump. For Leanne, true curl care is an educational journey; she eliminates the guesswork, replaces frizz-inducing tools with specialized knowledge, and empowers her
clients to understand, love, and
effortlessly manage their natural texture.
Steve Ellis
Trained under the expert guidance of Leanne, Steve brings two years of
specialized curly hair focus to the salon, backed by a philosophy that honours hair in its purest state. To Steve,
conventional hairdressing methods simply do not translate to the organic behaviour of curls.
With over 30 years salon experience, he views curl care as a tailored
educational journey rather than a technical formula. Understanding that every pattern requires a unique,
custom-sculpted shape, Steve invests the time and focus needed to cut completely with the hair’s natural grouping. He rejects the reliance on heavy styling tools and superficial tricks,
focusing instead on teaching clients how to
understand, respect, and manage their own unique texture. It is a slow,
intentional craft that treats every single curl clump with the
admiration it deserves.

Blowdrying
Blow Drying Is Damaging Your Curls! | Lorraine’s Curl Tip For Healthy Curl Drying Methods Are you unknowingly damaging your curls with heat? Lorraine Massey, curly hair expert and author of Curly Girl: The Handbook, explains why blow frying (traditional blow drying with high heat) is one of the worst things you can do to your curly, wavy, coily or fractal hair. 🚫💨 Fragile curls have delicate cuticles that can be burned, frayed, and permanently damaged by excessive heat. Blow frying strips moisture, causes frizz, breaks curl patterns, and leads to dry, brittle hair. Sulfates
Why Sulfates Are HARMFUL for Curly Hair | Lorraine Explains the Truth About Sulfate-Free Hair Care Are sulfates ruining your curls? Lorraine Massey, curly hair expert and author of Curly Girl: The Handbook, explains why sulfates are bad for curly hair—and what you should use instead for healthy, hydrated curls. 💧 Sulfates like sodium lauryl sulfate and sodium laureth sulfate are harsh detergents that strip natural oils, dry out your strands, and leave your curls frizzy, rough, and unmanageable. Think of it as sandpaper on your hair cuticle—ripping away moisture and damaging the curl pattern. 😱 🚫 Sulfates cause: Dry, brittle curls Frizz and flyaways Scalp irritation Cuticle damage Loss of natural oils ✅ What curly hair needs: Gentle, sulfate-free cleansers that protect the natural texture Moisture-rich, curl-friendly ingredients Hydration and nourishment for natural curls Water soluble products (like CurlyWorld Sham Free Cleanser) LINK TO LORRAINE'S CURL TIP PLAYLIST: • Curly Hair Tip #8 Cut Curls Dry Lorraine M...
